Hypnocast Episode Three . . .
. . . Magick Carpet Ride

Magick Carpet Ride (13:07, 4.6 megs). The third episode of the Brian David Phillips Hypnocast, is a straightforward guided imagery in which you imagine you have found a magick carpet which flies over the landscape on a special journey. Regular readers of Life of Brian will recognize this piece as one of the Waking Dream scripts I posted earlier here. Tarot and Hypnosis

A post on my free MP3 download of the Through the Gate into Tarot process, the first episode of my hypnocast, came up that the response to which is worth sharing for folks who have the same sort of questions.

Later, I'll do the whole exercise when undistracted. I'm also a Hypnotherapist and Tarot reader and yet do not (for the most part) incorporate the two in my practice. I have never felt comfortable mixing the two professionally, so I really thank you for this gift.

You are welcome. I don't normally use Tarot cards as part of my professional hypnosis practice except with people who volunteer to me that they use or read Tarot. For those folks, I teach them this process for introspective meditation. For hypnotherapy, I tend to use other processes than this sort of open-ended guided imagery.

However, for recreational or meditative use of Tarot with hypnosis, this process can work fairly well . . . particularly if you tag it in with Experiential Hypnosis type processes (deep trance phenomena so that all of the senses are fully associated into the experience - a bit like hyperempiria but using somnambulism, if you're unfamiliar with the idea see the "experiential hypnosis" portion of my blog at http://briandavidphillips.typepad.com/brian/ as I've enough there to get anyone with hypnosis experience enough to go on to get goin' themselves.

The inspiration to go ahead and record this new variation of the process I use with Tarot and hypnosis as the first episode of the hypnocast came from Ming-Yng Vidmar . . . friend and fellow hypnosis traveller . . . who, with her husband, famed hypnotist Dr. Joseph "Deepak" Vidmar (his webpages are here), comes regularly to my mostly-monthly hypnosis workshops and community get-together thingies. I was demonstrating my process and found out she also enjoys Tarot cards (I have a rather sizeable collection of rare and beautiful decks and while I do not use them for "fortunetelling" per se, I do employ them for introspective meditation).

I use a sort of Deep Trance Identification/Modeling process that I call the Vicarious Experiential Machine in which folks watch a movie, look at a series of photographs, or read a story and then hypnotically associate fully into the experience and imaginatively experience it as if it is happening to them right then (for athletes, this sort of experience creates muscle memory and greatly accellerates skill improvement). As I loved Piers Anthony's World of Tarot and Cluster novels, I thought it would be really neat to use the process and then step into a Tarot card to fully experience that sort of meditation as if it were fully associated and real ala the novel's experiences for "Brother Paul." It worked beautifully.

As a hypnotist, you might be interested in the original process, I taught a webinar (web-based seminar using text chat, voice, and webcam) on the process for the Hypnosis Technique Exchangea couple years ago and may have posted summaries there in addition to my other posts on experiential hypnosis there and on the blog as I do occassionally post about my workshops here in Taipei and I have demonstrated this process a few times in that context.

For those unfamiliar with it, the process can be used as a full on associated hypnotic process (my preference) or as a simple imaginative guided imagery (as presented in the MP3). The variation in the podcast MP3 uses a three card spread that allows the unconscious to generate a positive learning experience vision or imaginative adventure that has "everything to do" with whatever is going on in someone's life at that time.

Another variation of the process, is a simple one card draw (either random or selected - some folks will start with the Fool and then go through the entire deck (either in order of the Major Arcana first or through random draws) in a way so that they eventually create a personal connection and understanding of every card in the deck at the intuitive level. Basically, one enters trance and then imagines the borders of the card becoming a portal and then steps through the gates into the world beyond the border of the cards and then interacts with the characters that can be seen and that are hidden beyond the card's border, in essence allowing the unconscious to create a narrative or experience that enhances one's intuitive understanding of the card. Obviously, with deep trance, the experience can be much more powerful than simple relaxation or light trance.

They're called memory machine (an early name for the Vicarious Experiential Machine process) and condition folks to use the process . . . albeit, while I have had folks email me that the process works great for them, when I work with clients I always run the process in a live hypnosis session and make certain I have somnambulism to compound the conditioning then I give them an audio recording to reinforce their trigger sets rather than to do the conditioning. However, highly suggestible folks or those who repeat the process for some time, have reported good results just using the free MP3 for themselves (eventually, I will be taking most of the free files down as I re-record things either for my commercial product line or for the podcast). If you (or anyone else reading this list) would like to give it a go in relation to Tarot spreads or processes, please let me know how it goes for you (the process results, not the private visionary experience which personally I think should be a private matter).

I'm having a problem in that occasionally the audio pauses for a minute or more.....sometimes this appears to be planned but on two occasions so far, it was an actual interruption.

Are you listening to the files streaming (by pressing play from the internet link) or are you making certain the files are completely downloaded before playing?

The original files do not have behavior as you describe (except where it says the silence is for you to enjoy the experience and allow your unconcsious to further create an adventure for you beyond the gates of Tarot but in those instances the file will continue to play and you should hear the music in the background rather than just silence). I went ahead and downloaded the files to my machine at work and then listened to them with no such behaviors which makes me suspect it may be a difficulty with a streaming play where the file played a bit faster than your connection was able to stream it and buffer for your player.

Make sure the whole file is downloaded and then let me know if you encounter the problem again.

Not a complaint, just some information for you.

I am in Taiwan . . . in the heart of the Exotic East, so to speak and the podcast server is somewhere in the US as far as I can tell. I went with that service as a number of podcasters I listen to and it seems pretty reliable. While I am no newcomer to hypnosis by far or even to creating MP3s (I created over 100 MP3 trance sessions for my old experimental experiential hypnosis group back in the day), I am new to podcasting. I am learning the ropes as I go so I would expect quality to improve as I develop a system. For now, it's all shake downs and runabouts.

As you continue to breathe in . . . and breathe out . . . relaxing more and more with each and every deep, deeper, deeply relaxing breath . . . imagine, visualize, see, feel, or experience and focus now on a feeling, the feeling of LOVE. Perfect, love. Now, as that feeling of perfect love increases, you find yourself floating backwards to a time when you were living a different life, in a different body. You will always be with here and now while also allowing yourself to guide youurself to this feeling of perfect love. Gently, and slowly allow yourself to return to a perfect moment in a very special past life when you experienced perfect love. This is a very positive and special moment. Be sure to take note of all the details, the date, whether you are inside or outside, alone or with others and if you are with others, who are they then and perhaps now. I will count from three to one, at the number one, you will be able to comfortably and gently re-enter this wonderful happy moment of perfect love from a past life. Three, gently down. Two, almost there, gently and lovingly. And, ONE, now, comfortable and pleasant. Take the next few moments to explore this special and positive moment from a past life removed in time.

As you continue to breathe in . . . and breathe out . . . relaxing more and more with each and every deep, deeper, deeply relaxing breath . . . imagine, visualize, see, feel, or experience that you are standing at an ancient gateway into a beautiful garden . . . and as you walk through the stone archway, you see a single word carved into the living rock . . . Xanadu.

Walk for a distance and notice the beautiful flowers, the beautiful colors, the fragrant and special and relaxing smells, the feel of the comfortable sun's warmth upon your skin, the sound of the birds, the feel of the soft gentle breeze upon your hair, the sound of the wind gently rustling the leaves of the beautiful trees . . . really let go and feel the soft gentle earth under your feet and the comfortable softness as you now sit upon a luxurious cushion, comfortable, peaceful, by the edge of a small and beautiful pond . . . watching the butterflies, the colorful fish, and listening to the gentle sound of a fountain in the middle of the pond where there is a small structure with a dais upon which is a wonderfully special and beautiful statue, an extremely beautiful carving of The Goddess . . . and as you look into her gemstone eyes, so bright and beautiful and magickal, you find yourself drawn within, peaceful, comfortable, as a wave of unconditional and beautiful love washes over you from the top of your head to the tips of your toes as you allow yourself now to really feel it as your breathe in the love, and breathe out, relaxing more and more, really feel it now as with each and every breath in, you feel yourself drawn into the peace, and love, and tranquility that is her presence, as with each and every breath out, you feel your body relaxing more and more as your mind stills even deeper as your spirit fills with love, unconditional beautiful love . . . healing love, joyful love, the love that is both within you and without you, deep, deeper, deeply within that special place down down down deep inside you where everything is true and you just . . . let go . . . and surrender . . . to this beautiful loving, healing, joyful, special feeling . . . as those eyes . . . those beautiful eyes . . . just draw you in . . . deep, deeper, deeply within . . . into that feeling . . . with each and every breath . . .

As you now feel yourself being drawn into an astral plane, an imaginary realm of love, light, goodness, and pure unconditional love . . . as your body relaxes even deeper now with each and every deep beautiful breath . . . now . . . as I count from five to one, with each number, feeling yourself being drawn even deeper into her eyes, her beautiful eyes, and filling you more and more with unconditional love, really feel it now, until I reach the number one, and at that number, allow yourself to find yourself deep deeper, deeply within the realm of the loving imagination, where she will guide you into a beautiful experience, an imagined journey or experience of love, joy, peace, and tranquility . . . let your unconscious mind now float free and beautifully as your conscious mind just stills and relaxes even more . . . let it happen of it's own accord and allow yourself to experience a beautiful imagined experience, a loving gift from the goddess that carries a meaning and vitality and loving message just for you . . . just let it happen now . . . as you drift even further . . . five . . . deeper . . . four into the love . . . three . . . so relaxed and so filled with the loving kindness and peace of mind . . . two . . . almost there, really let go and surrender to the experience as her eyes draw you in . . . and . . . one . . . let the loving feelings drift over you and through you . . . healing love, peaceful love . . . deeply meaningful love . . . as you now walk through another gateway of the mind, stepping into a peaceful, loving, experience . . . a loving gift of meaning for you through her love . . . for the next few minutes . . . which is all the time you need . . . beginning . . . now . . .

MAGICK CARPET RIDE . . .

As you continue to breathe in . . . and breathe out . . . relaxing more and more with each and every deep, deeper, deeply relaxing breath . . . imagine you are standing in a green grassy meadow with a forest to one side and beautiful mountains to another and imagine that have before you a wonderful magickal artifact from days of yore . . . it is a carpet, a magickal carpet . . . and as you roll the carpet out onto the soft green grass before you . . . imagine a positive feeling of expectation and wonder.

Imagine now that, you step upon the carpet and notice how soft and comfortable it feels as you sit or lie comfortably upon it's soft and magickal surface.

Now, as this is a magick carpet, you know you are perfectly safe and very comfortable as it slowly begins to rise, easily and comfortably . . . at a speed and height which is completely comfortable and relaxing just for you.

Now . . . imagine that you go on a wonderful little journey, riding your magickal carpet over the trees of the forest, seeing the beautiful lakes below, perhaps going through the beautiful mountain pass . . . just allow the magickal carpet and your imagination now bring you on a beautiful and wondrous journey . . . over beautiful palaces of myth and magick, through lands with exotic creatures and pleasant experiences . . . just for the next few minutes, which is all the time you need to explore and enjoy your magick carpet ride . . . beginning . . . now . . .

welcome to . . .
. . . the WAKING DREAM

With this post, I am creating a couple new categories for Life of Brian . . . the Waking Dreams series of focused trance guided imagery brief sojourns into the imagination.  As regular visitors to my webpages at http://www.briandavidphillips.com know, I love guided imagery.  It is relaxing and quite enjoyable . . . which is one of the reasons I have included a unit on focused trance guided imagery in the course structure and syllabus for the Society of Experiential Trance.  Of course, I really love it when combined with hypnotic hyper-acuity and hyperempiria, but our purpose here is to introduce the concept in a simple and straightforward form that anyone can enjoy . . . by focusing on short setups that can lead into interesting imaginational visualizations that anyone can enjoy by reading the short setup script and then simply . . . breathing in, breathing out, closing one's eyes, and letting fantasy take flight.

This is intended to be a series with one setup situation or script posted here on a weekly basis . . . sometimes more, sometimes less.

These are scripts for focused trance guided imagery.  Before experiencing any of these pieces via guided imagery, hypnosis, or other focused trance techniques, please read through the piece first to determine if the imaginative experience described is appropriate for you (it is not recommended that you go through any of these processes blindly without having first determined if they are appropriate for you).  If you are uncomfortable with certain types of language or imagery, then please do not indulge in recreational, nondirected or un-facillitated focused trance sessions that include that imagery.  If you have a fear or phobia related to any of the imageries, you are encouraged to consult an appropriate guide - you can find links to highly qualified and competent focused trance guides and hypnotists here.

To enjoy this imagery, you can either record or have someone else read the standard brief induction, imagery, and emerging processes included here which employ a shortened variation of one of the frameworks also found in more detail in the Waking Dreams professional quality recordings or you can enjoy the image in a freeform self-focused trance style.  Simply read the induction first, then the imagery, and finally . . . after allowing a few minutes for undirected imaginative experience, the emerging.

BRIEF STANDARD INDUCTION

So let's begin.  Go ahead and let yourself go into a deep level of relaxation, take a nice long breath, fill up your lungs, real good, breathe all the way in, and hold it for a second. And as you breathe out, close your eyes down, and let a wonderful wave of relaxation flow through your entire body.

Keep your eyes closed and follow your breathing. Take a few deep breaths, releasing any tension that you carry in your body as you breathe out.  Breathe in, breathe out, and relax. Breathe in, breathe out, and relax.  Really let yourself go loose, limp, and relaxed.  Breathe in, breathe out, and relax.  (Pause)  Good. Now give yourself the suggestion that with each time you breathe out your body becomes more and more relaxed.  Just let yourself feel like you’re relaxing down, down, down each time you breathe out.

BRIEF STANDARD EMERGING

(After suitable pause)  Now gently bring your attention back into the here and now.  It is time to bring yourself back to full awareness.  In a moment I will count to five.  At the number five, your eyes open, you are fully aware, alert, and feeling great, remembering all of your wonderful experiences.  One, two, three, four, and five.  Eyes open, feeling wonderfully refreshed.

UNDIRECTED SELF-FOCUSED TRANCE EXPERIENCE

To use self-focused trance with this guided imagery:

  1. Read the Waking Dream guided imagery to inspire your imagination
  2. Get comfortable and close your eyes
  3. Take six deep breaths in and out and with each breath feel yourself relaxing
  4. With each deep breath out, tell yourself you are relaxing deep, deeper, deeply down, down, down, very relaxed with each and every breath
  5. Continue breathing, slow, deep, and relaxing down, down, deeper down
  6. Allow your imagination to take you into the scene, feeling, or inspired context of the guided imagery, allowing your mind to float and let things happen
  7. Concentrate on letting yourself really "get into" the experience and really FEEL whatever your imagination conjures
  8. FEEL, imagine, and EXPERIENCE the images, thoughts, and feelings as vividly as is possible and concentrate on increasing that imaginative involvement even more deeply and more powerfully with each and every breath
