What Revolves around the Earth?

The title for this video is way off . . . but the actual content is fun, you just want to shout through the screen the correct answer . . . simple question, he doesn't know the answer and polls the audience who also get it wrong . . . The Majority of French People Are Dumb Video . . . the comments and titles are offensive as they stereotype all French based upon a single example . . . one taken out of context . . . but the video itself is quite fun. As an Associate Professor at university, I have seen similar hesitations and incorrect answers under pressure given by students at a top university. It's situational phenomena.

Evolution of Beauty . . .

Tim Piper has created some amazing pieces for the Dove campaign on self-esteem for girls.

Evolution of Beauty . . .

Dove Daughters . . .

Dove Little Girls . . .

Some excellent work.  The visual impact is strong and the message is well presented.

The campaign is controversial in that it highlights a great deal of just how messed up our perception of beauty has become, narrowed to the point that it can no longer fit what "real" women are like. The campaign is also controversial as critics look at Dove's motives behind the creation of the Self-Esteem Fund. Is it really public service or is it a twist on expanding market domination?

Dove Self-Esteem Fund (media coverage montage) . . .

Valid questions regarding motivation but the message is still valid as the statistics and the damage to young women - who later become adult women with increasingly problematic self-image - is real and quite pervasive.

All the best,
Brian

Rome . . . kicks

Lorraine and I just finished watching all twelve episodes of the first season of Rome. Wow. That show just kicks and a half. There were plenty of liberties taken with history but the storytelling is just plain wonderful. Wow. Good to know the second season already has six episodes filmed. Lorraine figures that HBO Singapore must have stopped showing it because of all the naked bits and graphic violence . . . I think the naked bits scared them more than the violence. Either way, no tits and cocks on the television here . . . glad we got to see the originals. Wow.

All the best,
Brian

Hamlet A Go Go . . .
. . . the Hamlet Musical from Gilligan's Island

My all time favorite bit from Gilligan's Island. . . the episode where the castaways perform a musical version of Hamlet.

My daughter Kaye has played most of these songs either as a piano solo performance or on accordion in the orchestra in concert. When I sing along, "Neither a borrower nor a lender be" folks just stare and stare and stare some more.

And . . . speaking of the castaways . . . everyone's favorite castaways . . . Ginger and Maryanne the way we always dreamed of them . . .

Yep, exactly the way I dreamed it as a boy . . .

Gilligan gone to the island in the sky

I only just saw this bit of news . . . Bob Denver has passed on. Sadness. I loved Gilligan's Island and think The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis was brilliant stuff. Another great American Icon has passed. The reruns will continue.

Don't Read This! The Friends Finale

The folks at the new gossip blog Defamer have scooped everyone with an on-the-set report from the filming of the final episode of Friends . . . Defamer: The Friends Finale: We Were Never Good At Delayed Gratification . . . Do NOT read this unless you enjoy having endings spoiled.

I really didn't expect the bit with Joey and the Bonobo. You'd think they'd try to avoid bestiality references right now with all the Ashcroft anti-porn crusade stuff going on right now.

Vanilla Ice . . . one man's perspective

DeansPlanet has an interesting take on Vanilla Ice as one of the participants in the Surreal World reality show (which we don't get here but I wish we did as I'd love to see Ron Jeremy and Tammy Faye head-to-head. See. Vanilla Van Winklet.
