Musical Warmth

My daughter Kaye (www.kayephillips.com) has begun reporting to her mother and myself that when she plays the flute or the piano she has been noticing that her "head gets hot" . . . the room may not be particularly warm but she notices a particular warmth in her head after she finishes playing.  She loves music and as readers of Life of Brian know, she has always been particularly focused when playing piano which might as well be an extension of herself.  The other day she took an exam for flute at school and scored one hundred percent and so that has evidently slipped into her focus aparatus as well.  It's an interesting way of experiencing "the zone" that so many of us strive to attain, a warmth or hottness in the head.  BTW, Kaye has finished a few new compositions.

In other musical notes, the other day I showed Kaye a video of a very young Osmonds performing Crazy Horses (my favorite Osmonds song from my youth - I played the original album so much way back then that I actually ruined the vinyl and had to buy a replacement).  She never saw them before and so the dance moves seemed comical (well, they are) . . .

. . . see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyRiNZDb5EY for the video.  She had no clue who they were other than knowing Donny as "Joseph" from the DVD of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, a much older Donny.  So, I put in my Ultimate Osmonds CD (yes, I do indeed have such a collection sort of beastie) for the drive to and from school yesterday and she was singing along with a few of the songs
which I noted and we talked about the difference between writing pop music and classical sort of material like she normally writes.  We then watched the DVD of the Osmonds Fifty Year celebration in the evening (yes, I have that too and, yes, I was a bit bummed that I didn't get to go to their concert when they hit Taipei last Summer, we all have quirks and the Osmonds are one of mine, among many many others . . . so there) which allowed her to see them as "old people" as she characterizes anyone in their late forties or beyond (quite a few of the screaming girls in the front row of the concert had white or silver hair). It was interesting that we noticed right away that the earlier versions of the songs had very strong and clear vocals and simple straightforward musical performance while the new versions have a whole lot of sound going on that sometimes makes it difficult to hear the vocals which are less steady or strong in quite a few places (albeit enjoyable).  The clips on the DVD of the various Osmonds as young people were  a bit more inspirational to Kaye I think as they talked in interviews about writing their own material.  As a youthful music-obsessed songwriter herself, such inspiration has great meaning and value.

Judging Fighting Ability in the Face

A new study shows that people - men and women - can accurately judge another person's fighting ability (based upon upper body strength) by looking at their face . . . http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/10/081022135809.htm . . . it seems that testosterone levels are shown through the bridge of the brows and the line of the chin and this correlates very very highly with upper body strength which would have been an indicator for fighting ability for pre-technological man.  The ability to judge these characteristics probably came over time as males needed to know when to back down or challenge someone without risking excessive and potentially deadly physical harm to themselves while females use the ability to judge which males are more likely going to be able to protect them or their offspring.

Neither sex is very good at judging the physical strength of women . . . most likely as most physical threats are caused by and taken care of by males in primitive cultures (as well as most modern ones).

WHAT IS HUMAN DESIGN?  Human Design is a map, a blueprint, a schematic for who you are and what you are supposed to do with your life here on Earth. It is a map of your True Self at both the conscious and unconscious levels. It is the Instruction Manual on how to live your life at the Physical-Emotional-Mental-Spiritual levels that fulfill your purpose in life and enables you to live a path of greatest fulfillment and least resistance and pain.

Human Design is a new system that came to Earth through Ra Uru Hu in January, 1987. It is a new knowledge that combines the ancient systems of Kaballah, Chakras, Astrology, and I’Ching in a new way that includes modern sciences of physics and genetics.

This group is not for academic information giving only. We will have times for questions about personal issues in your life. It is a group for personal transformation and growth. I will know the map and chart of every single person in the group. That is why the group is kept to a small and personal size.

Islamic Baby Secretly Converting the Toddlers of America?

What do you do when the baby doll you bought for your child . . . the one that says "Momma" and gibberish style babytalk . . . suddenly starts spouting off pro-Islamic propaganda disguised as that very same babytalk gibberish?

You complain to the world that's what!

Evidently a bunch of folks have stumbled upon the secret plot to subvert the values and religious ideals of America by the Secret Masters installed in the pentagonal chambers at Fisher Price on behalf of their Secret Overlords at Mattel.

Or not.

Over the past few weeks, news media at Wausau have been receiving emails and calls from concerned parents who have discovered that the babytalk gibberish spouted off by the babydolls are really the phrase "Islam is the light."  For some reason, this has upset the predominately conservative Christian parents, many of whom equate Islam with anything but the light.

According to Mattel the doll says "Momma" and gibberish with no Islamic light.  If they are indeed telling the truth and have not inserted the pro-Islam programming into their chips (nefarious corporate overlords that they be) . . . and this seems more likely in this instance since a call to Islam doesn't really fit their previous corporate agenda of converted the world to serve the Dark Lord (see their Harry Potter, Dungeons and Dragons, and other toys and games and products) . . . then why are folks hearing the "Islam is the light" sentence so very clearly?

Well . . . this could be an excellent example of projected belief and mass influence (a polite way of saying hysteria, a mental virus of sorts that infects people's beliefs and experiences).  Because you expect to hear the phrase your brain makes sense out of the garbled mess and creates that impression so that you then clearly hear the phrase.

Similarly, folks who expect to hear "my sweet Satan" when playing Stairway to Heaven backwards do indeed hear it.  A few years back the most active discussion on my blog was on that very issue . . . Stairway to Heaven Backwards: My Sweet Satan . . . although that discussion died down a while back when the original referenced page vanished (actually, it's at http://jeffmilner.com/backmasking.htm now and is absolutely brilliant so go play).

Or . . . is it really just suggestion?

Hypnosis Assists Dental Patients . . . and more

Jim Killackey has an upbeat piece on NewsOK profiling the work of a hypnotist who helps dental patients - http://newsok.com/hypnosis-assists-dentists-patients/article/3312909 - specifically how he has been working from an office shared with a dentist and comes in and helps with patients who are experiencing fear or pain.  Hypnosis is very effective for fear release and pain removal.  Dental and medical hypnotists often are trained in the sort of speed hypnosis techniques that I teach in a number of my courses (including my comprehensive video course) as well since one really doesn't have a lot of time to sit around with a long induction but needs to get in and settle things quickly so that the dentist or medical practitioner can then do their work.

Hypnosis reduces Hot Flashes

The second most common cancer in the world is breast cancer (the most common is lung cancer).  As women who receive treatment for breast cancer often report hot flashes, it is important to find relief.  A recent peer-reviewed study found that women who underwent hypnosis and used self-hypnosis imagery found a very significant reduction in hot flashes.  See a report on the study here.

London and Washington Very Different on Approaches to Terrorism

See the New York Times for a discussion on how the US and UK differ in their views on approaching terrorism (From London, a Rebuke to U.S. Approach on Terrorism).  The US uses the military approach that pushes the concept of suspending civil liberties while the UK prefers a civil approach that maintains due process.

I'm siding with the UK approach myself and agree that the next American president really should drop the use of "War On Terror" as a catchphrase and find a way to deal with terrorism through civil means that protect the democracy and civil liberties.

Is Obama a Hypnotist?Only if you define hypnosis in a meaningless way.

There is a very spurious document making its rounds right now in the various hypnosis forums right now that purports to be an examination of Barack Obama's use of hidden covert manipulative hypnosis techniques in his speeches by making a number of specious leaps (here).

As to actual content of the document and the idea of hidden hypnosis, I have no patience for the growing argument that anything that influences folks should be considered some form of hypnosis (often applied to discussion of communication events by those particular authors disagree with) or that using effective rhetorical strategies with purpose is inherently unscrupulous or manipulation.  We seem to be going in a direction of defining hypnosis so broadly that it no longer becomes useful to discuss it as there becomes no real difference between "hypnosis" and "rhetoric" and "influence" and "persuasion" and "communication" . . . in our attempt to codify and explain hypnosis and to get it out of the realm of the watch waving we have begun to overdilute it.  Yes, influence is important . . . yes, communication is important . . . and these are certainly areas that make us better hypnotists if we understand influence and are better communicators . . . but influence alone is not hypnosis . . . communication and rhetoric alone are not hypnosis . . . even "trance" alone is NOT hypnosis.

One commenter on the Obama hypnosis document in the Hypnosis Technique Exchange discussion made the following statement:

What public speaker doesn't use oratorical techniques? They've been around for centuries, only now we are in the frame where they have to be Ericksonian, but Uncle Milty didn't invent this stuff - he found it already running in humans.

Indeed.

I have been teaching communication at university for over two decades and I often begin the very first day of my classes each year with a bit from Marcus Fabius Quintilianus (aka, Quintilian) who is considered by many to be one of the cornerstone thinkers of Western rhetorical studies (what we used to call "communication" before the latter became more fashionable) who created a thorough and detailed system for developing the "orator" (which we now would consider the "public speaker" or the "communicator").

Quintilian objected to the belief that communication should be considered "persuasion" as there are so many different ways to influence and persuade folks (he noted that money is a very quick and effective way to get people to do what you want them to do).

Rather, to Quintilian, the true essence of rhetoric, communication, is "a good man speaking well" . . . the tricks of the trade of a good communicator are not merely tools of manipulation . . . although they certainly can be used that way by unscrupulous persons.  When I teach students at the university Robert Cialdini's various laws of social influence, I do so with that signpost from Quintilian . . . any good communicator should learn this stuff and then use the techniques in resonance with their own strong moral guide, should learn to influence and to more effectively get their message across (public speaking courses across the world have included the Monroe Activation Sequence for many many years - it was taught to me when I was an undergraduate and I taught it when I began teaching public speaking courses at university - because it is an effective way to structure a persuasive speech and no one has any ethical issue with including the visualization step which so obviously is related to the hypnotic operator . . . no one has issue with it because the technique itself is not the ethical question . . . as long as we are "good men speaking well" then it is being used appropriately).

Of course, Obama is using effective speaking techniques . . . McCain likewise has speech writers who endeavor to craft words for him that increase his effectiveness at swaying public opinion (the recent appeals to fear and guilt by association are just such rhetorical strategies).  If Obama were not using effective rhetorical devices, that would be the shocker.

Whether or not Obama is indeed a "good man speaking well" . . . well, that's a different question.  I have a strong sese that Obama IS such a man . . . with a message that is resonant with many of my own beliefs.  I also believe that McCain is for the most part a good person who believes in his message . . . a message I disagree with on so many fundamental levels.

Honestly, I wouldn't normally even go to a site like Penny Press Las Vegas (the hosts of the Obama Hypnosis file) which I would consider well on the ultraconservative side as my personal beliefs and politics are well on the other side of the spectrum.  I found the so-called analysis to be offensive, particularly the nonsensical "EXPOSING OBAMA’S DECEPTION MAY BE THE ONLY WAY TO PROTECT DEMOCRACY" at the bottom of every page which shows the agenda of the document which in and of itself is a negative suggestion that the writer and publisher hopes will sink into the reader's unconscious simply through the repetition and the softening up of the main text itself . . . as if there isn't plenty of mudslinging and spurious statements coming from the other side of the aisle in this particular election.  The "analysis" LOOKS detailed to those with a superficial knowledge of the material BUT it jumps to a LOT of conclusions and uses a number of those so-called "evil" techniques in its own right.  Dressing the document with "footnotes" is all well and good except that the material is being used in away to that is out of context or at least as dressing to lead readers into conclusions that are well more than giant leaps.

The various hypnosis forums really aren't the appropriate place for the Obama criticism (or McCain bashing for that matter).  For instance, the Hypnosis Technique Exchange is a large list with folks with many different views from many different countries.  While the US presidential elections are extremely important to many in the world at large, most here are not interested in getting sucked into a political flamewar.  One reason the list works is that folks are allowed some degree of tolerance and are encouraged to enjoy their own beliefs and modalities.  One problem with politically charged debates - particularly when they are colored with the "ethics" argument - is that they inherently end up with an us versus them mentality that can be damaging to one's good relations in other contexts.  We're all here to discuss hypnosis and related modalities.  While the political debate is important, it is specifically appropriate in other forums - for instance, most folks who read my blog regularly have a pretty good idea as to what my political leanings are.

Hypnotic Fun at CTS

I was invited to be the special guest for a performance segment in an episode focusing on hypnosis of Michael Cheng's English language television program.  My segment is to be selected clips from a mini-hypnosis show I performed in the studio.  The piece was filmed in the CTS studios (中華電視公司) in Taipei on Oct. 17, 2008, and we absolutely had a blast.  I really liked how they dressed the set too.

My segment was a bit on hypnosis as entertainment.  The premise of the episode is that one of the regulars is invited to see my stage hypnosis show in Taipei and she then invites another friend to come along with her to see it again.  So, the studio set up a stage with a couple volunteers and in-studio audience and I performed a mini-show.

Colin Powell Endorses Obama

Wow.  Powell does more than endorse Obama here, he presents a clear flowchart comparison of both Obama and McCain campaigns to show strengths and weaknesses and why he went the way he did.  Along with so much of his analysis, I really find his comment about faith should not matter as a debate issue (although that characterization of Obama is incorrect and based upon hate-mongering).  So, what if he were an Arab or a Muslim . . . he is still American.  There are plenty of Arab Americans who should not be ostracized or mischaracterized as unamerican simply because of ethnicity.

Sequencing Suggestibility Effects as Inductions, Convincers, and Deepeners

Here are a few videos that fit this month's Hypnotic Video Challenge on Suggestibility Effects . . . with a twist.  This series were done with Sneh Desai, a well known trainer in his own right in India (http://www.snehhouse.com), who attended as a student at of my Speed Hypnosis Techniques seminar in Bangalore, India in September.  Sneh is a wonderful trance partner so I demonstrated a number of techniques and effects with him.

ANY.  Since this piece was filmed in a teaching context, I have included some of my comments after the induction which only takes a few moments (after all, it was a speed hypnosis seminar).

Suggestible Sequencing and Deep Trance Spontaneous Amnesia

During a demonstration of a number of suggestibility effects, I  gave a volunteer several increasingly oddball suggestions and compounded the effects.

After emergin from hypnosis, he ended up "forgetting" what had happened - a case of spontaneous deep trance amnesia.

During the debriefing, I suggested that the memory return and he was a bit shocked and amused to discover that his butt had "vanished" during the session.

Hypnotized to Strip in Public?

This video is NSFW for many folks so be advised . . .

So, you have a hypnotist doing street hypnosis in the park at some other public area and he suddenly hypnotizes a couple women to start taking their kit off.  How would YOU react?  Watch the reactions of the other folks in the line waiting to be hypnotized as they see these girls strip off their tops.  Then . . . breathe easy . . . it looks real BUT this is a hidden camera gag show.  The hypnosis is fake but the strippers are real.  The original video can be found at http://www.buzzhumor.com/videos/25708/Hypnotized_To_Strip_Prank.  I would strongly suggest that those of you performing genuine street hypnsois (I do teach classes on that very subject), do NOT attempt the above.  Yes, if Ugly George's statistics hold up, then a few women might actually strip (depending upon where you are) but most will just attack (see Ugly George's Hour of Truth, Sex, and Violence).

As to the video above, personally, I think his induction style is wonderfully theatrical and looks great from a performance perspective.  Hmmmm.

As regular readers here know, Robert Anton Wilson is my all time favorite author (I re-read Illuminatus every couple of years and enjoy it more and more each time).  While I have always enjoyed Moore's work in comic books and graphic novels, lately I've been reading more of his work in mind and fantasy, magickal philosophy and practice and finding him to be delightful . . . well, at least to me.  There is a treasure trove of videos on the various sharing sites for those with cursory interest.

One last twenty-three skidoo, indeed.

How to Read TAROT Cards

Most readers of Life of Brian know of my interest in Tarot.  I do indeed teach various courses in Tarot in addition and as part of my hypnosis work (no, I don't use a fortune-telling approach but prefer a more traditional divinatory context, one that is more akin to introspective meditation than prediction).

While I do teach courses in reading Tarot, I am always interested in other approaches.  Snooping about on the web, I came across a few approaches that are worth contrasting.  The two how-to pieces are fairly straightforward and while their orientations are very different - psychic versus faking - both are actually legitimate approaches to the cards and there are plenty of folks doing professional readings using either of these approaches.

I know, they put this thing together for fun and tongues are planted firmly in cheeks but this is actually a fairly common approach among psychic entertainers and is even more ethical then some of the learned cold reading lines some folks use. If one simply changes the tone and timbre to an intuitive approach, you have a fairly straightforward and valuable approach to reading cards for beginners.  Of course, I would strongly suggest folks learn more before doing professional work but the kernel concepts are here.  How to Fake a Tarot Card Reading by videojug.

iOUIJA . . .. . . Turn Your Ipod into a Ouija Board

The folks at crave have been playing with their iPods a bit more than most folks and they've decided that playing music or listening to lectures (yes, I use my iPod to listen to recordings of lectures a whole lot more than any music).  They've decided they really needed a new way to communicate with spirits and  . . . so . . . thus is born the iOuija . . . yes, you too can turn your iPod into a Ouija device.

Actually, their Turn Your iPod into a Ouija Board article isn't too bad and it does cover most of the bases.

As regular readers know, I am no stranger to the arcane mysifying talking spirit board and even have a special edition board of my own that I give away as freebies for certain of my shows or metaphysical hypnosis trainings.

The board works because of the ideomotor effect so if you're uncomfortable speaking to spirits, you can tell yourself it's just your unconscious mind doing all that moving of letters about and on the iOuija selecting songs from the beyond . . . or, is it?

Desired Intention Memory Box . . .. . . Navin Prabhakar hypnotized by Brian David Phillips

Navin Prabhakar (yes that Navin Prabhakar [http://www.navinprabhakar.com], the famous comedian, actor, and singer) attended the Speed Hypnosis Techniques workshop I taught in Mumbai, India, and volunteered to be trance partner for the demonstration of the Desired Intention Memory Box creative trance process.

Those of you familiar with my improvisational hypnosis approaches know that I like to use a challenge technique that requires a person to spontaneously create new inductions or processes on the spur of the moment . . . this is one of those improvisational processes, and so while the Desired Intention Memory Box induction and process turned out to be a rather nice and powerful process, this is the first time it has ever been publicly demonstrated as I'm making it up as I go along, working with the feedback given to me by the trance partner. Navin turned out to be a wonderful trance partner and the process went beautifully, from the creative induction through the powerful changework pattern.

Sorry for the poor lighting, but we were not setup to video this particular session but went ahead anyway as a number of the demonstrations were unique and the folks in the Mumbai seminar were very wonderful (as were the folks in the other cities I toured, for that matter).  The whole thing was a great experience.

As it turned out, every single one of the demonstration improvisational challenge trances that I did in our India courses turned out to be extremely beautiful processes.  Some were on video but most were not (we do not normally video courses but keep the material and the experience for those who attend).  The Manifesting Abundance Balloons was particularly a "WOW" type experience but I am also partial to the rather interesting Elephant Induction I performed.

This video is part of a series of highlights filmed during various of my Speed Hypnosis Techniques workshops in India from Aug. 30 through Sept. 7, 2008, in a three city teaching tour (Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore). In addition to the Speed Hypnosis workshop Navin also attended a special actors trancework session at Kishore Namit Kapoor's Acting Institute (web) that I was invited to co-present with my friend Pradeep Aggarwal (web) who was my local partner for the India tour.  We are already setting up our next series of courses in India and have also added a new date for Singapore to our schedule (details coming very soon).
